Hi, this is my first post in this forum. I am impressed over the amount of topics in here :)

I was about to inspect the big vacuum tank, which I thought was located under the right front fender. No tank there. I assume I have the small tank located with the A pillar left side. Is this small A pillar tank the only tank?

Appreciate any responses.

Greetings from Norway.

Hi Erik old Viking ;) ,

you only have a small vacuum tank for air conditioning system. It is on left front but only accessible from inside. There is a flap underneath your dashboard. If you remove that you will find that small tank.

Hi Dr-DJet,

thanks for your quick reply.
Okay, so I dont have the tank under the fender. I would believe that the small tank you refer to was too small to maintain vacuum over time. We learn every day :)

Hi Erik,

size of the tank only determines the volume, not for how long vacuum is kept.

The big tank was needed for SLs up to 1985 with vacuum only operated central locking. yours has an electrical vacuum pump.

Hi, looks like you know a thing or two about the vacuum system. I have another question which bothers me, because I am not able to figure it out.
I take my liberty to ask you about this. I will refer to the attached vacuum diagram and picture.
According to the diagram, which I believe is the correct one (!), the line (marked with red arrow) from the gas port in the distributor leading to the vacuum amplifier (90), is not there.
And I cant find the amplifier (90).
The line going from the temp switch (79 upper) is NOT going via 90, but directly to the EGR valve. If I can locate 90, I could rewire according to the diagram, but again I am not completely sure if I have the correct diagram...
Dont know if this explanation is understandable, but I wonder if the lines in my car is wrongly connected, or if I have a wrong diagram?
Do you have any idea?

Hi Erik,

would be nice if you could join our Netiquette and sign with firstname.

Regarding your vacuum amplifier. This is not an amplifier, just a control valve. It is only used till model year 87. As of model year 88 it is omitted. Source: 107 workshop manual in menu above then read chapter 14-475 Checking exhaust gas recirculation .

Many 560 SL drivers decided to remove EGR. But I am not a specialist on that as my car does not have such fancy stuff from origin.

In German manual you also find a picture of 79 and 90:

Hello Dr-DJet,

thanks for the tip about the signature. Appreciate the guidance to enable me to adapt to this excellent forum.
As I have an -88, does that explain why I dont have nr 90. According to the schematics in the link, does it seems like the hose connection referred to in my picture (of the drosselklappen) is unconnected. Still, it is open ended and atmospheric pressure is present. Maybe that is correct.
Thanks for taking this of my chest. I will leave it as it is.

Best regards Erik "the viking"

Hi Erik,

it is not unusual to have a universal 2 fold connection on throttle if both single or double connection is possible depending on year of make. In that case close the open connector with a plug.
