The climat fan on my 1988 W107 SL is not working. I have tested for electrical current at the switch on the dashboard consol, and there is power there. What next ??
Any suggestions would be a great help.
Danke

do you have automatic climate control? Did your fan break down gradually? What was the last thing you remember? I once had a bad fan break on me over time, had to be replaced. Removal is easy, disassembly a bit harder but it can be done to restore rotation of the fan. There are also two brushes that wear down over time, Id be surprised if yours are worn given the youth of your car. Check the connection under the hood for oxidation.

I suggest replace the blower motor, since the motor has a life time limit or before breaking down you should o/haul it .as mentioned Mr Adil it is quite simple replacing motor.

Thanks for your replies.
This is not the radiator fan at the front of the car, but the one inside for the heater/AirCon.
Yes it might be the carbon brushes. It was making some different noise, not very loud, but a different type of humming for a few month How do I see the motor? Is it through the air vent at the base of the windscreen?

at first i would check the electrical fuse. the fuses are situated in the passenger foot area on the right hand side under a cover. on the backside of the cover u can see which fuse is responsible.
if the fuse is ok, u can find the fan pretty easy:
open your hood. near the window there is a black-plastic-cover, fixed by 8 or 10 screws. just unfasten these and lift up the cover. there is your fan. it is fixed with 4 screw-nuts. unfasten them (might be rusty and break up the threaded rod) now just unfasten 2 screws on the connector at the end of the cable and unplug it. lift the fan carefully. it needs to be turned a little.

Thanks for you help....I was hoping thats where it is, and not under the dashboard inside the car.

You were correct about the threaded studs.......three of them have pulled out because they were completely rusted .
What do you suggest to repair them?

i bought 4 screw-nuts, that where about 3cm long. a friend of mine, who has a lathe, rounded the outside of the nuts at one end for about 0,5cm (?). this rounded end has to fit exactly in the hole at the fan. now u can fasten the fan with these nuts by screwing them on the leftover ends of the rods.

In my case there are now only holes beneath the fan where the threded studs were attached to the steel. The studs came out with the fan.
Do you think would large aluminium pop rivets, say two on each side
between the holes in the fan, be good enough to hold it in place?

Is the fan unit the same as any other model, perhaps 300E W124?

Now that yours is out, tell us about the condition and maybe we can help with restoring the functionality.
About the studs: you need to take a creative approach. Every situation is different but I think it can be solved. You describe holes. Maybe you can machine a stud that fits the hole, thread one end and weld the other into the hole. It is cumbersome but you will need to have a good tight fit between fanunit and body in order to avoid vibration, noise, leaks and other headaches. If you make your project into a report, others will surely appreciate it.
Good luck with this.

Thanks for your help. One of the two carbon brushes(contacts) is very low and is not making good contact with the copper armature. It looks like they can be replaced. Have you done this before in a Mercedes fan?
Before I removed it from the car I made it work again by spinning it with my fingers, and switching it on, but the brushes definitely need to be replaced with new ones.

I got the brush set from Performance Analysis Company in Tennessee, paid $19 plus shipping. Contact George at perfanalysis@comcast.net for orders, they accept visa and master card. He also mentioned that he now has sunvisor clips and sockets in all colors if someone needs any.
Cheers,
Adil

You are very helpful. I guess you just cut the braided wire to the brushes, instead of trying to pull them out of where they are crimped onto that copper-wound resistor type thing, and then solder the new ones at the same point.
Yeah I guess an extra pair of hands would be needed. Iv got one of those magnetic stands with the magnifying glass and the two crocodile clip/arms for fine electronic work, and this will be its first job.
Best regards,
Donal
