"Transmission to throttle link" bush missing

I just had a look for the part number of the bush which seems to have fallen out of my car, but can't find it.

Does anyone know what the part number is?

In the picture below you can see the "ball" and the hole which the bush must fit into. I found it was simply sitting in the hole. Surprisingly the transmission is still shifting well and I only spotted the problem when I was gluing a part of the heat shield back onto the bulkhead.

I have just been reading on Benzworld that this bush was the subject of a Recall in the USA.

Does anyone know if it is applicable in the Europe?

The new ball joints arrived today, I have found that they will fit in place with a 7mm "E" clip.

I fitted the new ball joint today and have a question to ask.

I had planned to fit the ball joint and E clip an place and placed a towel there to catch any dropped parts, but as they looked like they needed to be cleaned I decided to remove the parts first.

I first removed this link.

Then these E clips.

Then cleaned up the parts.

Grease added, and AC50 for protection, then put back in place.

At some point I want to set up a zinc plating system at home to clean up all of the engine ironmongery to make the engine look more tidy. Many of the plated steel parts are starting to rust.

Back to the question. Since I put this engine in the car in 2011, the up shift has been too late, even now with the control rod pushed as far back as it will go, it still shifts from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 close to 3000rpm with a normal, gentle acceleration from stationary. This happens regardless of engine/transmission temperature.

I found that with the control rod disconnected it changed up very early and very smoothly below 1500rpm.

Can anyone suggest what can be done to reduce the shift point rpm?

Cheers
Jim

Hi Jim,

if I remembered well, the clip on the rod should adjust the shift point. Some millimeters back or forward and a check on a test drive.

Hi Michael, from further reading I have found out that if the rod is set back, shifts will be early, and if set forwards, shifts will be late.

I have set mine as far back as possible and is is slightly improved from a week or so ago but still too late.

I do have a theory though. I have looked back at the pictures of my 1980 replacement 450 engine (from a 1980 car) I bought at the end of 2010.

See below, the rod is missing.

I do not remember the detail, however I must have swapped the existing rod and lever over from my old 350 engine and used that.

Seen here.

I am now wondering if perhaps the parts differed between the two engines.

I would appreciate if some one could check the part numbers for both the lever and rod for a 1976 350 engine vs a 1980 450 engine.

Cheers
Jim

Thanks, I finally found the same pn for the rod using the online epc, A1170701475 for the rod, but for the link to the side of the transmission it was A1152700859.

Anyway that theory goes out of the window. Next I will check on the connection between the rod and link and then the link to transmission.

With further adjustment to both the top of the rod and then "adding" some slack in on the bottom lever, I have made a significant improvement.

Now with gentle acceleration the transmission shifts from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3 just under 2000 rpm which is a big improvement.

Does anyone know what the correct shift RPM/speed values are for the 450SL?

Cheers

Hi Michael, thank you, that is perfect!

One last question, can you tell me the difference between, Vollgas and Ubergas, I understand Vollgas means full throttle, but I am not sure how you can go higher than that?

Hi Jim,

"Vollgas" means full throttle and "Übergas" is the Kickdown function.
