Moin,

The US 6,3 has 8:1 compression. The Euro is 9:1.
Mercedes has to my knowledge never stated any difference in power on the two different engines. But they are different and feel different. Mine is fitted with a euro engine.

All new pistons sold now by Mercedes for this engine however is 8:1

Even a 1969 model? What makes you sure of that?

To really find out what was going on, you would have to know the detailed emission parameters of the engine and the exact laws at that time.  See for example:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_Air_Act_(United_States)
www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/42/7521#tab_default_2
www.federalregister.gov/
Then you could check if the engine met the parameters of the current act. But this seems to be really complicated, you need to be a lawyer for that.

Sorry. My bad. I was a bit quick there. Pre 69 are of course 9:1.
9:1 engines for 109 are supposed to have motor.-no 100981 according to Wörle Fahrzeugtechnik. US are 982 I think.

...that´s all wrong, too ! All 6,3 Europe or USA engines are 100.981 only the optional low ratio version is 100.982 ! The 100.983 is the low ratio version of the 600 engine !

And there is no 8:0 ratio for the USA 6,3 engine before model year 1972 !

It makes sense that the "8:1 M100" wasn't introduced before 1971 (MY 1972) because according to Wikipedia this was also the year when the lower compressed 300 SEL 4.5 was introduced:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W108/W109
The table is a bit misleading, but as far as I understand it, the unmodified "3.5" was sold in the U.S. until 5/'71 and then replaced by the "4.5".
