560SL Transmission Rebuild 722.313 was created by btrautman
I recently completed rebuilding the rear axle.  Since I am this far into the car, I plan on rebuilding the transmission.  The car has 155,00 miles or 249,448 Kilometers.  I am looking for recommendations on sourcing Master rebuild kits.  Mercedes only sells individual parts..........  All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!
Bob

I'm not aware of any Master Conversion Kits available, except for a gasket kit.

I also bought everything in separate parts.

What was the most serious problem you found when rebuilding your ATX?  Did you have to replace any components in the valve body?  Purchasing individual parts can get expensive!

Thanks!

The biggest problem was getting a new outer disc for the disc carrier. Not all thicknesses were available.
Solution: With the strongest snap ring (3 mm), I was just at the upper wear limit, so I accepted it.

I'm not sure if I'm using the correct English technical terms here, sorry.
My English skills have deteriorated somewhat.

Your English is fine! I do understand what you are referring to. There is a German Company that sells a Master rebuild kit. I plan on purchasing that and then purchase individual parts from MB as I need them. MB should really have a kit for this transmission. Purchasing all parts individually gives new meaning to an American expression of being "nickeled and dimed to death!"

Thanks!

I order a Banner Rebuild kit for the 722.313 ATX. along with oil pump bushing.  I will replace steels on an individual basis as needed.  The kit is manufactured by a German company.  Torque Converter will be inspected, separated, cleaned and rebalance by a local company that rebuilds torque converters.  I'm not leaving anything to change on a approximately 40 year old auto.

Thanks!

Hallo Bob,
That's really interesting. I also overhauled my transmission, but when I was researching spare parts, I never came across a transmission repair kit. I didn't find anything about it here in the forum either, although very few people here repair their transmissions themselves. Thanks to your post, I found them on eBay.de from German sellers. Unfortunately, I don't need them anymore. However, the brake bands are missing from these kits (sorry, I don't know the correct english term).

Viele Grüße

Thorsten

Hi Thorsten, the brake bands are available here if needed. One website is: Cobra Transmissions and another is transtar. For your rebuild, I am assuming you replaced the K1 and K2 drum rivets with threaded bolts? Did you fabricate yourself or purchase a kit for these? I am using the factory manual on the 722.3 as well as an earlier version of ATSG manual. The latest manual does not seem as thorough as the earlier manual.

Thanks!
Bob

Please take a lot of pictures.
I will have to do this job too, sooner or later.

Hello Bob,
I didn't drill out the rivets on the K1 and K2 because the seals were still in good condition. The WIS describes how to check the seals. I'm not familiar with the ATSG manual.

If you haven't planned to, I would definitely open and clean the control valve box, but be careful with the balls. They can be lost very easily. Be sure to take photos of them, it will make reassembly easier.

Viele Grüße

Thorsten

I do plan on disassembling the valve body, cleaning and checking on condition of parts....... I have an ultrasonic cleaner that is excellent for this.

Thanks!

After completing the rear axle rebuild and a successful test drive, Transmission at this time is fine, I've decided to wait awhile before I rebuild it.  I did purchase the rebuild kit.  Pictures attached,  The K1 and K2 drum screws to replace the rivets are included in the kit.

Does anybody know where this rebuild kit from a german company can be purchased in Germany?? I couldn't find any supplier for it. Strange!!
Bob, you did apparently buy it from cobratransmissions.com, right? On their webpage I don't either see that they sell this kit.

Cheers,
Lutz

Hello Lutz,

do not think this is a German Company.
But why do they use "Made in Germany" in the logo?

I definitely find it super interesting. If I'd found it during my transmission overhaul, I probably would have installed it.
I've immediately saved the page to my favorites.

But why do they use "Made in Germany" in the logo?
The parts of their kit are made in germany, so that's fine
