Teil meines Motors, 0280140032 (1980 450 Motor)

Weiß jemand was der Unterschied ist?

Oh Jim,

I was sure your would find that destructive video next. Drilling a hole into it, taking everything apart without replacing thermostat and sealing. :headbanger: :headbanger: :headbanger:

As you already found out, 0 280 140 038 is for 350SL and 0 280 140 032 is for 380 SL Europe, 450 SL and 500 SL till start of energy concept in 9/81. What is the difference? Well the air flow that is controlled by the orifice in the upper part.

Please do not destroy the 0 280 140 032 AAV like that.

How else can you take it apart without special tools?

Also where can you buy the new thermostat element?

Hi Jim,

you need special tools to take it apart safely. And there is nowhere where you can buy a new thermostat element including all parts necessary to keep everything sealed and proper afterwards. Just thermo element is available but it needs to sit in a housing properly sealed and with proper accuracy of 1/100 mm so that it fits and seals well. It takes some testing and adapting to existing housing so that it all fits well.

The principle is the same with all AAVs. Before you destroy the real one I can assist you. However be sure that it is really broken and not working properly.

Once the car is up to the normal running temperature and RPM becomes stable at at say ~700 RPM (lets say this takes 10 minutes or so), there is then a slow drift over approximately 30 minutes where the RPM will drop to 600RPM.

My guess is this is caused by a sticky piston in the AAV, slowly closing to its final position.

Hi Jim,

that can be. But normally AAVs tend to stick in cold postion (which they seldom reach). Mine only creates trouble in fall when I drive my 450 SL to its winter rest garage. Not really trouble, it only keeps up rpm a bit longer during warm up.

However you can easily test: Wehen your engine is warm, close the hose from AAV to intake with a clamp and check whether this makes a rpm difference. If yes, then it is your AAV not closing. fully.

Bloody hell,

an AAV is an auxiliary air valve. I am sure Google cannot translate it to German :P German short is ZLS. Do you know now what it is?

In German, an AAV would be an 'Aktivkohlebehälter Absperr Ventil', which our cars dont have, just later models with tank leak diagnostic. That might cause some misunderstanding.
