My name is Gunter. I am a longtime Mercedes owner, I started out with a 280ce, almost 25 years ago.
I recently bought a 560SL from 1988 "option 498 japan" with 85.000km. It's a 261 "willowgreen" or "nelkengrün" exterior and 275 beige leather interior
It seems to have been standing still for some time. It is very nice and completely rustfree but there are some issues with fuel-delivery.
I hope to find some answers regarding the fuel issues, but also to try and help other drivers with questions.
Greetings
Gunter

welcome to the Sternzeit. Can you please tell us where we can locate you geographically? If you could post a photo of your 107, that would also be nice. Otherwise, I wish you lots of fun with your car and you will certainly get answers to your questions in the forum. the swarm knowledge is enormous.
schöne Grüße aus dem sonnigen St. Leon-Rot

you are most welcome with your 560 SL - our mass model - in SLpedia Sternzeit 107. I see that you found out how to attach images. I removed that you included the same picture twice.
You are lucky with a Japanese 560 SL as it already has European bumpers, km speedometer and most European feature. Just the engine is US version.

yes, I did see the "Anhang" feature to include pictures.
I recently learned that only 701 examples of the "Japan" version optioncode 498 were ever made. So, indeed, the "American" engine, with European visuals.
The Canadian en American versions were federalised (with the big bumpers and sealed-beam headlights), and the Australian version, with European visuals but it had the steering wheel on the wrong side.
So it is indeed a rare example!
Thanks for the kind words!

it is indeed so rare that not even a wiring diagram exists for those Japanese cars. You will have to use European 500 SL wiring diagrams in normal case and US 560 SL diagram for engine.
But we would have had all goodies needed to make a US 560 SL European. Bumpers and speedometer disc from merc450, speedometer gear set and changes to lamp control module after removal of side markers and 3rd brake light by me and European front lights from vdh. Plus an Operation manual in German done by Lutz, Rolf, Winfried and me. Et voila a former US car is suddenly European.

Yes, I know that a lot of conversions exist.
So I am very proud of the fact that mine is not converted, and totally original "ab werk."

welcome also from my side. Nice car, enjoy it!
In fact it reminds me of a 300SL in quite a similar look, which I had inspected in Finland in march 2013

yes, quite a similar color-scheme. Is that "thistle-green?"
did you know that an original 560sl code Japan does not have the chrome part on the rear-trunck?
Or is that only on my SL?
That is also possible

welcome whith your nice SL.
There were two versions: either with spoiler or with chrome handle.
That depended on the year of manufacture and the engine. In addition, the spoiler could always been cancelled.
I suspect you had a spoiler that was removed.

Thank you for your kind words.
I did not know that a chrome handle and a spoiler do not exist at the same time.
The absence of both on my SL does give it a very "clean" look!

by default all US 560 SL had no spoiler. But Japanese 560 SL did if not explicitly deselected when ordering.

Is the spoiler "delete" an option code? I referenced through "lastvin" but nothing is mentioned there.
The SL has been repainted once, so maybe the second owner (I am the third) selected to have the spoiler removed?

yes spoiler remove is an option code which was automatically applied to all US cars. If it is not seen on your car, yours was suppplied with spoiler. As you have also no chrome handle, everything speaks for that. Ragetti here also has a JP 560 SL and he still has his spoiler.
